Dear Readers,
I was looking through the audio saved on my phone recently when I noticed something slightly ridiculous. I had hundreds of things available to listen to, yet I'd been returning to the same handful for months.
The same playlists. The same familiar voices. Even the same episodes I'd already heard. It wasn't that I particularly loved all of them anymore. They were simply easy choices that didn't require much thought.
There's something comfortable about familiarity, of course. But I started wondering how often I mistake what's familiar for what I actually enjoy. I could spend twenty minutes browsing for something different and still end up pressing play on the usual thing.
Eventually, I tried listening to something completely outside my normal preferences. It wasn't necessarily better, but I found myself paying closer attention because I had no idea what to expect.
That was the interesting part. When you already know every word or anticipate every sound, your attention doesn't have much work to do. Something unfamiliar gives you a different experience simply because you haven't decided what you think of it yet.
I don't believe everything new deserves your time. But occasionally, choosing something you wouldn't normally consider can be more interesting than another hour spent searching for the perfect familiar option.
There's Something Unusual About This Listening Experience [Ad]
Most of us have a familiar collection of music, podcasts, and recordings we return to. But every so often, something different comes along. The 33rd Frequency is an audio-based offering built around an unconventional idea about sound and its significance. If you're interested in exploring a listening experience outside your usual routine, take a closer look at what the program includes and decide whether it appeals to you.
You might find that your next interesting discovery is something you can listen to.
If you're curious about the concept, I'd look at what's included in the complete listening experience before making up your mind. The unusual premise is worth understanding on its own terms rather than approaching it with expectations about what it might do.
I still return to my favorite playlists.
But I've started leaving a little room for things I haven't heard before.
It's surprising how quickly your listening habits become predictable without you noticing.
