Something in the house stopped working recently, and after ten minutes of unsuccessful amateur repair, I called someone who actually knew what he was doing. He arrived, listened to my explanation, and then barely looked at the part I’d spent all morning examining.
Instead, he checked somewhere else entirely. A few minutes later he’d found the problem. What looked broken wasn’t broken at all—it was simply the place where a problem somewhere else had finally become visible.
I loved that distinction. Most of us naturally investigate where the symptom appears. Experienced people often work backward. They understand that the interesting question isn’t always “What’s wrong here?” but “What would have to be happening elsewhere for this to happen here?”
There’s a difference between noticing an unusual detail and following it far enough to discover what caused it. Most people don’t need to investigate everything. But when one answer creates three better questions, that’s usually when I keep going.
